21 Autumn Self Care Ideas

“you can’t pour from an empty cup – take care of yourself first”

Autumn is an important time to practice self care because the days are getting shorter, colder and it can become pretty miserable.

Don’t let the darkness and coldness take a toll on your mental health!

Sometimes when you feel like your mind is on overload, you need to take a step back to gain some perspective and calm.

You might already have a self care routine that you stick to, but you should change up some of your routine to reflect the new season….. you probably don’t want to treat yourself to your favourite frappucino in October anymore.

Autumn self care ideas

1. Nature walk

I love going for long walks in the park at this time of year. The trees are really beautiful and it is important to make sure you are getting outside!

If you’re into photography take some photos of the beautiful autumnal scenery.

2. Find your new favourite hot drink

All the cafes start to bring in their seasonal drinks – try ALL of them! Starbucks Pumpkin latte is my go to.

3. Make your own warm drinks

There are loads of YUM drinks that you can make from the comfort of your own home that are easy. My fav is this vegan Tumeric Latte.

4. Film night

Organise a film night in with friends – never too early for a christmassy film right? Love actually anyone?

5. Get baking

Hello baggy jumper season! Thanks for being less revealing than my summer attire. Pumpkin pie and pecan pie are for life, not just thanksgiving.

6. Candles

There are so many nice candles out there it is hard to narrowing it down. I always feel like candles are a gift, so it feels like a real treat buying one for myself! You can’t get much more autumninal than the yankee candle autumn range.

7. Jigsaw Puzzles

Geek alert – I love jigsaw puzzles!!! Jigsaw season is officially October to March. They are so therapetic and you can even watch your favourite TV show at the same time. Best jigsaw puzzles are Ravensburger.

8. Change your hair

Either get a new haircut for the change of season or dye your hair. Summer balyage can look a bit worn by the time it is October (as my hairdresser said….) so you could swap it in for a nice warm chestnut colour for a change.

9. Read a book

Lose yourself in a book, or consider starting a self care workbook.

10. Detox your friend list

Stop hanging out with people who are having a negative impact on your life.

11. Mulled wine or cider

Rosé season is over. Make some warming mulled wine or cider with loads of seasonal spices.

12. Relaxing bath

I never used to be a bath person. Those days are long gone – I just wasn’t doing it right.

Get the bubbliest bubbles you can find, your relaxing candle, a book, a glass of wine, a cool facecloth for your head and you’re good to go.

13. Mental health app

Autumn is the perfect time to try one. Headspace is the best for beginners and teaches you how to deal with negative thoughts.

14. Spend time with your pet

Have cuddles with your dog if you have one! If not, try and borrow from a friend.

15. Clear out the house

Clearing your house is so therapeutic. Get rid of as much clutter as possible for a clear mind. Marie Kondo has the best tips!

16. Fluffy blanket

Treat yourself to the fluffiest blanket you can find. It’ll last forever.

17. Board game night

Organise a board game night with friends. Everyone brings their favourite games. My faves are Skull King, Chameleon and Scrawl.

18. Happy light

Try a happy light if the darkness is getting you down.

19. Update your wardrobe

I hate the days (every day) where i just stare at my wardrobe not knowing what to wear.

However, all you need is a few new items to turn your summer outfits into autumnal looks, play around with different Fall looks.

20. Try a new exercise class

Exercising is on every. self care. list. ever. for a reason!

Plus it’s fun to try new things.

21. Spa night

Create your own little spa in your living room. Light your new candle, put on some relating music, do your face masks, nails and a pedicure.

Don’t forget cucumber for over your eyes.

This list can be a little overwhelming for people who have never practiced any self care before – and might actually feel quite uncomfortable for someone who always feels guilty and never makes time to do things for themselves and the things they enjoy.

If this sound like you, start with your favourite and then try and build up from there!

Soon you will be implementing little pockets of Autumn self care into your routine that you won’t even notice anymore as they will become habit.
